Emergency aid for Venezuelan refugee and migrant children

The Venezuelan crisis is one of the most forgotten crises in the world. Venezuela faces widespread violence and economic turmoil causing food shortages, blackouts, a collapsing healthcare system, hyperinflation and a lack of basic necessities such as medicines.

Already, more than 4.3 million Venezuelans have fled their country out of desperation to another country in Latin America. The largest number of displaced Venezuelans are in Colombia – 1.5 million – and nearly 500,000 of them are children, some of whom are traveling alone. Many families are sleeping in the streets or in informal camps in unsanitary conditions. Children’s education has been disrupted and their emotional wellbeing is at risk.

These children and their families are in need of medical care, protected areas dedicated to children to prevent child trafficking, food and supplements for children showing clear signs of malnutrition, clean water to prevent parasitic diseases and information and legal assistance for children and their families.

Here’s what we are doing

As the crisis broke out, we immediately started a project to support children and their families in the Colombian region of the Norte de Santander. Through the generous support of our donors, we have already offered humanitarian assistance, protection, psychosocial activities, psychological and legal assistance, food and food supplements to over 24,000 people. Unfortunately, the crisis inside Venezuela persists causing a continuous flow of Venezuelan migrants into Colombia who need our help.

We offer child-friendly spaces in Cúcuta, in Villa del Rosario and in Puerto Santander, where each day we host hundreds of migrant children in transit.

We provide access to safe drinking water, financial support for life-saving medical care (including surgeries, risky pregnancy checks, food, housing, etc…) Up until now, we have assisted more than 500 children, 600 pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding and 800 adults in the counties of Tibú, Puerto Santander and La Gabarra, yet the numbers of beneficiaries continue to rise each day.

We’ve created a community cafeteria in Puerto Santander where we offer free breakfast and lunch to over 800 people a day.
